I dance

Postby jochanaan » Fri Jan 29, 2016 3:38 pm

I dance with the devil
Not in pale moonlight
A Sword Dance
In God's Son-light
You can live your life in fear--or you can live your life.

For a start:

Probably a good few more have developed such a thing.

That said - style of musical accompaniment?

The Highland sword dance is an entirely different thing.

Musical accompaniment? Why, "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs," of course. :D

Right

Now, what hymn tunes best fit a sword dance with the devil?

Seriously, I do get and relate to the point.

At least you're not one of those who claim to be wits, and are half right.

Petros, several old hymns come to mind, notably "Onward, Christian Soldiers." 8)

A Mighty Fortress has some applicable lines. "one little word shall fell him" the word being the "Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God"
If, when we judged others, our real motive was to destroy evil; we should look for evil where it is certain to be found, and that is in our own hearts. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Both very good for sentiment and mood. I'm not sure how they work for a sword dance. One very much a march, the other perhaps a little measured. Here is another, by the bye, from my old stomping grounds - which is also a bit measured, of course.

Ah, you're teasing me, Petros! Or taking me too literally. Nay, when I say Sword Dance I mean a deadly earnest battle in spirit realms. Fortunately, the war was won when Our King rose from death. Praise His Name! Amen.

Not playing with you. And not necessarily too literally, more exploring options.

The deadly duel is of course one of the possible readings, and swordplay in duels has much in common with dance, which is in large part where all those sword dances come from. Hard or imagine a dance based on bow or jeavelin, though you could do something with battleaxes and spears.

But there is also the more stylized, arguably subtle "dancing with the devil" in the sense of meeting attack with subtler parry, more analogous to fencing than full sword battle.

Sword dance???

I layed two swords on the floor and then played every kind of music I could find.

They didn't move a fraction of an inch. 'Just sat there. :?
